Mastering feedstock variability

  • The real challenge

Today's facilities must analyze an unprecedented range of evolving feedstocks to produce one or multiple finished products, whether shifting from vegetable oils to complex waste fats like tallow and Used Cooking Oil (UCO), or processing entirely new streams like plastic and tire pyrolysis oils. Achieving sub-mg/kg accuracy across these highly variable matrices is a major challenge. Heavy particulate loads, multi-phase suspensions, sample phase states, and high oxygen content can severely interfere with standard analytical measurements, leading to inaccurate data if left unaddressed.

  • A smarter solution

XRF offers a distinct operational advantage over traditional combustion techniques by providing robust matrix flexibility without requiring complex instrument reconfigurations or tedious acid digestions for every new stream. While the core workflow allows operators to simply fill a cup and analyze, certain challenging samples require proper sample pretreatment and matrix-matched calibrations to ensure repeatable results. To simplify this process, XOS application experts are readily available to help optimize analyzer setups and advise on the ideal pretreatment and analysis methods for your unique feed streams.

  • Why it matters
Accurate monitoring of trace elements is essential for process control, asset protection, and final product quality. Precise tracking of sulfur, chlorine, and phosphorus prevents premature catalyst poisoning and equipment corrosion within the refinery. Additionally, identifying trace Group I and II metals (such as Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, and Magnesium) is critical to ensuring finished renewable fuels meet strict regulatory standards and prevent injector fouling or engine deposits downstream. Mastering feedstock variability with a properly optimized XRF workflow ultimately helps facilities maintain process uptime and protect overall product margins.
