Precision analysis with confocal XRF optics
Our dual polycapillary optic technology enables precise 3D elemental mapping and depth profiling for a wide range of applications, from radioactive material analysis to art restoration.
Non-destructive XRF for depth profiling
Confocal X-ray fluorescence (confocal XRF) is an advanced technique that uses focused X-ray optics to achieve 3D elemental analysis. By overlapping an excitation beam and detection point, it creates a "confocal volume" for precise measurements.
Unlike standard XRF, which examines surface or bulk composition, confocal XRF enables depth profiling and non-destructive mapping of elemental distribution within a material.
This method offers several key advantages for complex analytical challenges:
- Depth profiling
Confocal XRF acts as a material probe, exciting and detecting X-ray photons from within the sample's interior. This allows for the measurement of elemental concentrations both on the surface and at various depths without cutting or cross-sectioning the sample. - Background reduction
The polycapillary focusing optics function as spatial filters, significantly reducing background radiation from surrounding areas. This is particularly valuable for increasing detection sensitivity and quantifying elements within radioactive materials. - Small feature analysis
The precise focal spot allows for the detailed examination of microscopic features, making it an ideal tool for analyzing thin film thickness, micro-inclusions, and complex multi-layered structures. - Preservation and restoration
Because it’s non-destructive and offers depth resolution, confocal XRF is widely used in art restoration and forensics to analyze pigments, layers of paint, or historical artifacts without causing damage.

The small footprint, minimal infrastructure requirements, intuitive user interface, analytical performance, and limited user/supplier maintenance of the XOS Sindie+Cl makes it an invaluable tool in our Oil Analysis laboratory. Using the Etnom® Accucells has significantly reduced specimen and chemical usage.
