Advanced optics for synchrotron research
Our advanced polycapillary focusing and collimating optics enhance synchrotron beamlines by delivering superior spatial resolution and flux for diverse micro-analysis applications.
Enhancing synchrotron analysis with X-ray optics
Synchrotron facilities require precise control over high-intensity X-ray beams to conduct advanced material analysis. While modern X-ray optics can achieve nanometer-scale resolution, polycapillary optics remain a vital tool in synchrotrons worldwide due to their cost-effectiveness, ease of use, and ability to deliver substantial flux density gains.
By integrating these optical solutions, researchers can optimize beam delivery and signal collection, enhancing the sensitivity and resolution of their experiments across a wide range of scientific disciplines.
Polycapillary optics are typically utilized in two primary configurations within synchrotron beamlines:
- Excitation beam focusing
A half-focusing optic is placed on the excitation side to guide the nearly parallel incident X-rays—typically from a monochromator assembly—and focus them into a small spot ranging from 5 to 100 microns. This configuration is essential for micro X-ray analysis techniques, including micro XRF and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, where high flux density on a small sample area is critical. - Detector side collimation
On the detection side, a collimating optic acts as a highly effective spatial filter. It restricts the field of view to a specific volume within the sample, significantly reducing background noise generated by scattered X-rays. This setup is particularly advantageous for confocal XRF configurations, allowing for precise 3D elemental mapping and depth profiling.
