TUV Rheinland to Deploy XOS’ HDXRF Analyzer for Consumer Product Testing in Bentonville, ARK and Hong Kong Labs
Analyzers to Test for Hazardous Elements in Consumer Products
ALBANY, NY (January 5, 2011) – XOS, a leading provider of mission-critical materials analysis solutions for industries and regulators, announces that TUV Rheinland has purchased two state-of-the-art HD Prime analytical instruments for the detection of lead and other regulated hazardous elements in consumer products.
These analyzers will be deployed at TUV Rheinland’s new lab in Bentonville, Arkansas and at one of the company’s international locations in Hong Kong. They will use the high-definition x-ray fluorescence (HDXRF) technology developed by XOS to measure lead and other regulated elements at much lower levels, and with greater precision and reliability, than traditional XRF analyzers.
“TUV Rheinland is excited to be using the HD Prime analyzer at our new facility in Bentonville. There are other more traditional XRF systems on the market, but we chose to purchase XOS’ HDXRF because of its ability to achieve far greater precision and lower limits of detection, particularly when measuring surface coatings for regulatory compliance,” says Geoffrey Bock, Program Manager of Environmental Services for TUV Rheinland of North America.
The new lab, opening in March, will be a center for testing a variety of consumer products such as toys, textiles, and ITE equipment for compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The XOS equipment will also help TUV conduct chemical testing for RoHS, REACH and other environmental analyses.
HDXRF is capable of detecting levels of lead and other regulated elements in paint and substrates down to single digit parts-per-million in a broad range of materials. This level of sensitivity and accuracy is accomplished without the product destruction required by traditional “wet chemistry” methods that are also more costly and time-consuming to operate. HDXRF analyzers also comply with the new ASTM Standard Test Method – F2853-10 – for the quantification of lead in substrates and coatings.
“Compliance with a Standard Method is a key benefit of HDXRF analyzers for regulatory testing,” says Satbir Nayar, XOS Product Manager. “ASTM methods are well-respected, and in fact, necessary, when the test results are used as a part of reasonable testing programs and to ensure regulatory compliance. By using XOS’ analyzer, TUV Rheinland is ensuring compliance with global standards.”
