X-Ray Optical Systems Announces Major Expansion

- Grants Supporting New Projects Announced by U.S. Rep. Michael McNulty -

EAST GREENBUSH – X-Ray Optical Systems (XOS), a world leader in X-ray optics, components and analyzers announced today it is expanding its manufacturing space by 10,000 square feet at the company’s East Greenbush headquarters. “Our rapid growth has been fueled by an ever increasing demand for our products, particularly our sulfur analyzer, which is designed for a wide spectrum of petroleum fuels including gasoline, ultra-low sulfur diesel and heavy fuel oil. The demand for these analyzers has resulted in the need for additional manufacturing space,” said XOS CEO David Gibson.

Joining Gibson at the announcement was U.S. Rep. Michael R. McNulty (D-Green Island) who used the occasion to announce that two federal agencies have made grant awards to XOS. “I am pleased today to announce that X-Ray Optical Systems is the recipient of grants from both the Department of the Navy and the Environmental Protection Agency. Both awards are the result of competitive processes and are recognition of the cutting-edge research and technology advancements here at XOS,” McNulty said. According to McNulty, the Navy grant of $80,000 will be used to develop a gear box inspection system designed for use in routine inspections, periodic inspections or even in-flight inspections of the Navy’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. A successful cost-effective, low power, compact, non-destructive tool for verifying proper gearbox operation will decrease propulsion failure and aircraft mishaps.

The $225,000 EPA grant will fund development of an automatic monitoring system that can continuously collect samples and measure toxic air pollutants at trace levels utilizing a compact, highly sensitive X-ray analyzer coupled with an automatic sampling device that concentrates particulate matter (PM) to a small area for composition analysis, according to McNulty.

“XOS is truly a Tech Valley success story. The company’s growth in production, revenue and, most importantly, jobs is something the entire region can be proud of. The research and manufacturing here has implications worldwide. Today’s announcements validate the efforts by so many to transform our region’s economy,” McNulty said. “We chose to remain here in Tech Valley for a number of reasons. This includes the quality of life we can offer our employees, the quality of our colleges and universities, of our workforce, and, just as importantly, the quality of our public officials. Mike McNulty exemplifies that quality. He is not only supportive of companies like ours, he has been a driving force in the economic renaissance the region is experiencing,” Gibson said.
